John and I hosted a Christmas “cookies and cocktails” this year and quickly realized there were going to be about 7 kiddos at our place as well. I had the day of to figure out what I was going to do to keep all the kids entertained so I made some phone calls, fought the holiday crowds, and came up with this gingerbread house decorating table.
Decorating Station
Arrange candy canes, gumdrops, m&ms, sprinkles, and more in fun containers. I found the plastic snowflake and Christmas tree containers from the Target dollar spot and they made for the perfect candy dishes. Don’t forget to snag extra icing for the construction and decoration of the gingerbread houses (the kids never give you enough when kids are sharing the decorating duties). I even purchased a few extra festive candies to make it a little more fun.
PRO TIP** if you plan correctly (which I did not) I would suggest constructing the gingerbread houses first, and letting the kids get straight to the decorating.
Festive Atmosphere
Enhance the festive atmosphere with holiday decorations, twinkling lights, and cheerful music. I added a simple faux garland, a couple paper mache village pieces and mini christmas trees to the table scape. Kept it simple, and only put decor items on the table that I wouldn’t mind potentially getting icing on! Since we had the cookies exchange and cocktail bar happening at the same time,I pulled out the bar cart and set up a hot cocoa station near the kids table. I added various toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, and flavored syrups to make everyone feel included.
Building Sweet Memories
All in all, I was able to set up this adorable table for under $100 and in less than 24 hours. It was a huge hit, and every piece of gingerbread was decorated by the end of the night. So if your’e hosting a holiday gathering with friends, consider inviting the kiddos and setting up this quick and easyy table! Remember you can do this for almost ANY HOLIDAY. I just saw the cutest Valentines Day gingerbread houses. That with a pink table cloth and heart decor, then there you have it!
Happy Hosting
